Sorato Tokuo
NCEA & IB Tutor
Kia ora! I’m Sorato, a physicist at the University of Auckland and a recipient of the 2026 Department of Physics Scholarship. I come from a strong academic background, having been a high achiever in the IB Diploma and SAT. During high school, I placed 15th nationwide in the NZPMC and participated in the Physics Olympiad, experiences that taught me the level of dedication required to excel in high-stakes academics.
Over the years of studying Mathematics and Physics, I have developed many tips. How to learn the content, but also how to navigate the sometimes frustrating school system. For example, one thing I have learned for anything inviting fast accurate problem solving is you must first be patient. This avoids skipping steps or making assumptions just to reach the final answer. Only once you build this foundation does striving for speed actually contribute to better learning. I believe this mindset is especially important today, when answers are easily accessible through AI. I aim to provide a space where students feel empowered to discover ideas independently, using frequent encouragement to build the confidence that ultimately drives better grades.
Over years of studying Mathematics and Physics, I’ve developed effective strategies not only for mastering content but also for navigating the often frustrating school system. One key lesson I emphasise is that in areas requiring fast, accurate problem-solving, patience comes first. Taking the time to avoid skipping steps or making assumptions builds a solid foundation. Only then does speed meaningfully improve performance. I believe this mindset is especially important today, when answers are easily accessible through AI. My goal is to create a space where students feel empowered to discover ideas independently, supported by consistent encouragement that builds confidence and ultimately leads to stronger results.
I see tutoring as an engaging “game” of perspectives. Since everyone thinks differently, I tailor each lesson to suit your learning style and pace. While helping students succeed, I also reinforce my own foundations as I progress into advanced areas such as quantum computing.
Outside of academia, I’m a multi-instrumentalist, playing trumpet, accordion, and baritone ukulele. Recently, I've started growing a rebutia cactus and learning cultural comedy—from Western stand-up to Japanese Manzai and Rakugo. I believe this holistic curiosity helps me become a more engaging teacher, helping my students find their own joy and fulfillment in learning.
